This 4-week class will show you the basics of quilting, and you’ll have the cutest little throw quilt at the end of it!

Class is from 1-3pm on the following Saturdays: 2/24, 3/2, 3/16, & 3/23. Please note that there is a 2-week break between the 2nd and 3rd class; this is because of the Rose City Yarn Crawl.

Class is $250, and comes with a Layer Cake of your choosing. Binding and Backing fabric and Quilt Batting can be purchased at the shop for additional $$ with student discount

Tools will be available for your use throughout class, and/or you will also have the opportunity to purchase a beginner quilter’s set for the special price of $65, which includes:

  • small cutting mat
  • rotary cutter
  • ruler
  • set of piecing pins
  • set of basting pins

We also have a limited number of sewing machines for in-class use (if you need to reserve use of one, please let us know asap).

Bring with you to class:

  • Your sewing machine, preferably with the following feet (if you don’t have these feet, no worries, but you will benefit greatly from them for quilting):
    • ¼” foot
    • Walking foot
  • Any fabric you’d like to use for the binding and/or backing (this can be purchased at the shop too!)
  • Any tools you have that you’d like to use
  • Thread (this can be purchased at the shop too!)
  • Download the Layer Cake Loop pattern from Fat Quarter Shop and bring either a printed copy or electronic copy that you can reference

Class overview:

  • Week 1: choosing fabric, cutting & piecing quilt top. We’ll discuss best practices for cutting, and the chain piecing technique.
  • Week 2: laying out quilt top, assembling, and sewing your backing. We’ll discuss ways to piece your quilt, including web piecing. We'll discuss how to sew your backing together (and if we don't get to it during class, you can do it in the week between classes)
  • Week 3: making a quilt sandwich and making binding.
  • Week 4: quilting the quilt and attaching binding.
